Abstract:
It is often said that we have borrowed the Earth from our grandchildren. This idea highlights the responsibility we bear to protect the environment and preserve its beauty and livability for future generations. Concepts like environmental protection, sustainability, and long-term thinking are not abstract ideals but shared duties. This paper seeks to underline their importance and make them accessible to a broader audience. One key aspect in shaping environmental policy at the European level is the fact that national regulations can strongly affect the operation of the internal market. Differences in national rules concerning product features can lead to varying competitive conditions among Member States. As a result, ensuring the free movement of goods often requires EU-level regulation. Over time, the conviction has grown that a harmonised environmental policy is essential for the functioning of the internal market (HottΓ³, 2024, p. 87).
