Abstract:
Generational change in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is an influential moment that carries great implications for sustainability. This study explores the sustainability dimensions of generational transitions within Hungarian SMEs, focusing on the challenges and opportunities of this process. Drawing on qualitative interviews with family business owners and their successors, the research highlights the integration of sustainable business practices as a critical factor during ownership and leadership handovers. Findings reveal that while many SMEs face risks such as loss of institutional knowledge, generational change also presents opportunities to develop sustainable practices. The study emphasizes the importance of strategic succession planning and fostering intergenerational collaboration to meet environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals.
