Abstract:
Local economic development is a priority for cities and municipalities, aiming to enhance economic capacity and improve residents’ quality of life. However, local units in Croatia pursue different approaches and have varying priorities based on their unique circumstances. Each local government unit has distinct fiscal capacities, availability of public services, efficiency in public spending, and other factors influencing their development. This paper analyzes the perspectives of locally elected actors on fourteen topics related to the development of local government units. The research is based on the results of a survey conducted in 2023-2024 in Croatia. The topics address various aspects of urban life, including economic activities, mobility, housing, cultural services, poverty, environment, and others. The findings highlight local development priorities and identify the differences in perspectives on local economic development, providing insights into how local governments approach development and community well-being
