Abstract:
The urgency to decarbonize all industries, including petroleum refining, is driven by ambitious net-zero targets and a global shift towards renewable energy. The sector’s significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions underscores the urgent need to explore alternative energy sources and innovative technologies to mitigate climate impacts while enhancing energy security. This paper examines the potential role of green hydrogen in reducing emissions and transforming Europe’s energy system. It comprehensively analyzes the global and EU-level hydrogen market landscape, focusing on production, consumption, and market segmentation. The paper examines the integration of large-scale electrolysis in refinery operations, assessing market identification, sizing, and potential replication. A PESTEL analysis is used to identify factors influencing the transition to hydrogen-based technologies, emphasizing pre-normative research, communication, and regulatory frameworks. The findings contribute to policymaking, investment decisions, and the successful integration of hydrogen into petroleum refining processes
