Abstract:
The extremely low turnout of Croatian voters in the European Parliament elections in June 2024 illustrates Croatsβ lack of involvement in EU matters. Croatian peopleβs absence of interest in the elections could be attributed to a lack of information about the European Union, how it works, what EU citizensβ options are, or how to engage in EU activities. 69 undergraduate and graduate non-English major students from the University of Slavonski Brod in Croatia participated in a pilot research aiming to determine the relationship between a lack of enthusiasm to actively participate in EU decision-making and their knowledge of the EU. Findings suggest statistically significant positive connections between participantsβ positive views towards the EU and how well informed they were about the EUβs governmental, economic, geographical, and cultural features. The findings of this research should also be tested on a larger number of participants from the Western Balkans.
